Serbian "stone village", which amazes the world architects, will not deteriorate: The soldiers treated their souls here, and now it is proclaimed a cultural heritage (PHOTO)
It is said that there was a guest room here, centuries ago, where soldiers could rest their souls, and the name of the village was derived from that
They were built on a slope, deteriorating houses of the village Gostusa, were made out of stone and mud and they are covered with stone blocks, they will no longer withstand the test of time on their own.
The government of Serbia has reached a decision to proclaim this village near Pirot as a cultural-historical heritage. This means that this old mountain village with narrow, winding roads, and almost demolished houses, will remain preserved.
The village itself is a real rarity and it is a real archaeological jewel because almost all objects in it are made out of materials that can be found in the near vicinity of the village.
There are around 260 houses in the village, and 200 of them are authentic, and first written data about the village date from the end of the 15th century.
This is one of the rare, old, mountain villages with around 80 residents.
The residents are mostly natives, but there are also some descendants of Crnovuna - Karakacan shepherds from Epirus, named after the sheep they used to breed.
The locals are mentioning a legend about this place, not far from the Roman military road, that there was a guest house where soldiers used to feast their souls. Folk etymology said that Gostusa got its name after that.
The road has small rocks on it, and in the village center, there is a church of John the Baptist. Besides that, there is still as a school in the village from 1930, a building of the former local community from 1928, many bridges and three fountains.
Out of forty watermills, only 5 remain, and only one is being used now.
Due to everything mentioned, and because of many other things, the Government decided to preserve the authenticity of the ambiance of this place and to prevent any endangerment of the entire unit. That means that it is forbidden to create landfills in this area, to make warehouses, shopping malls, gas stations or factories.
Also, the goal is to preserve all culture monuments and to keep everything constructed in the future in this area in the similar dimensions and style so it fits in this environment.
