The attacker had two hand grenades - one he threw at the Embassy, and the other one he used to blow himself up

The news that a bomb was thrown at the US embassy in Podgorica, after which the attacker killed himself, echoed the Balkans on Thursday morning. The motive is still unknown, the investigation is ongoing.

There are still many members of the police on the spot, the police tape is spread which means that the investigation is in progress, and the embassy officials, as well as the guards, are silent - they can't believe what happened.

According to the Montenegrin media, the Police Directorate said that the attacker had two hand grenades - he threw one at the Embassy, and he used the other one to blow himself up.

According to the RTCG findings, it is probably a male person, whose identity is still being determined, and the remains were sent to the pathology.

The embassy building is not damaged. The Montenegrin government confirmed early this morning that an unknown attacker threw a hand grenade at the US embassy in Podgorica at midnight and then killed himself by activating another explosive device.

- Half an hour after midnight in front of the US Embassy facility, one person committed suicide with an explosive device. Just before the suicide, the attacker threw an explosive device to the Embassy grounds from the corner of the intersection at the Sports Center. It is most probably a hand grenade bomb. The investigation and identification are ongoing. The prosecutor is at the scene and he is conducting the research. Police Directorate of Montenegro - the Government of Montenegro wrote on Twitter.

After the explosion, the US Embassy wrote on its site, warning the US citizens to avoid the area of the embassy building.

Also, they said that it is desirable for people to monitor the local media and the instructions of the government and to avoid large gatherings.

At the same time, the Embassy pointed out that all visa-related services were canceled for today, and this was especially pointed out at the official Embassy's Facebook page.

On this occasion, the State Department in Washington announced that the US Embassy "is currently conducting an internal check to confirm the safety of its staff", the AP reported.

Under Secretary of State Steve Goldstein, according to the New York Times, said that the eyewitnesses saw a man throwing something over the wall of the embassy. The paper wrote that no one at the Embassy was injured.  

CNN reports that Goldstein said that the thrown bomb probably exploded in the air and that the body of the attacker was found around 30 meters away from the embassy walls.

He added that the safety officials of the embassy searched the terrain and they found no other explosive devices and that the building was not damaged in the attack. 

Goldstein said that the motive of the attack was unknown and that it is possible that this was a suicide attack.

THE INVESTIGATION IS ONGOING 

The officials of the Police Directorate of the Ministry of Internal affairs of Montenegro are working on identifying the person that threw the explosive device to the yard of US Embassy in Podgorica.

The police are intensively working on solving the case, stated in the announcement of the Montenegro Ministry of the Internal affairs, reports Tanjug.

As it was stated, the explosion was reported to the duty serves of the Security Center in Podgorica around midnight by citizens in the area of the city around Moraca, near the Sports Center Moraca.

The Officials of the Security Center went to the field at once and they soon found the lifeless body of an unidentified male.

That person died by activating the explosive device, and he threw another explosive device prior to that - a bomb to the US embassy grounds.

No material damage was done to the property of the embassy by the explosion, besides the crater that remained at the scene where the bomb exploded. 

The competent state prosecutor is informed about the event who led the on-site investigation. The evidence gathered will be subject to expert examination.

Officials of the Police Directorate are communicating with the representatives of the US embassy regarding this event. The public will be informed about everything that is found out in the future investigation, added in the statement.
