The value of marijuana is 4 million euros, and it was hidden in a truck with Macedonian license plates which transported old paper from Kosovo to Turkey
More than one tonne of marijuana worth 4 million euros was confiscated last night at the Blace border crossing between Macedonia and Kosovo. Drugs, which in the police and customs say that it is the largest seizure of narcotics in Macedonia's history, was hidden in a truck with Macedonian registration plates that transported old paper from Kosovo to Turkey.
When the driver E.B. (37) from Skopje parked the vehicle to pass through the transit procedure, the truck and the old paper stocks became suspicious to the border police. As soon as E.B. found out, he left his personal documents and the truck stuffed with drugs and ran into an unknown direction.
- Based on the risk analysis criteria, the customs officers informed him that they would conduct a detailed inspection. After a brief time, the customs representative of the truckers told the customs officer that the driver was moving away from the terminal and that he went in an unknown direction, leaving the vehicle and travel document with the customs authority. During the inspection of the truck several paper packs were removed and a total of 839 packages wrapped in transparent nylon film, in various shapes, sizes and weights, were found in the middle of the trailer between the stacks of paper. They were filled with green plant, which turned out to be marijuana.
The confiscated drug was destined for Turkey, and it would reach the market value of 4 million euros, reports Djoko Tanasoski, the director of the Macedonian customs administration.
After revealing of the drugs, the police conducted the search in the home of the driver E.B. (37) from Skopje, who is still on the run.
They haven't released more details, claiming that the investigation is conducted on the regional level.
- Everybody should understand that Ministry of Internal Affairs, Macedonia, and the government are prepared to fight crime. Working on this case is possible because there is a connection, that is why we are working regionally, said Oliver Spasovski, minister of internal affairs of Macedonia.
They say in the police that the investigation in progress and that they are still securing the objects and traces that can help the investigation.
The suspect driver E.B. who is on the run will be criminally charged for illegal production and illegal trafficking of narcotic drugs, psychotropic substances, and precursors.
