A powerful earthquake disturbed the citizens and tourists yesterday who spend their time at the coast of Ohhrid lake. Strong shaking was felt at 11:39 yesterday, and seismological instruments noted that it was a 4-degree on Richter scale, 8 kilometers east of Ohrid, at a depth of 3 kilometers.

Earthquake struck Dubrovnik: After Ohrid and Trebinje, Croatia was shaking as well

Besides Ohrid and its surroundings, where the earthquake was 5 degrees on the European macroseismic scale, the earth shook in Resen and Struga with intensity of 5 degrees, and in Bitola about 4 degrees of the same scale.

The unbearable noise that came from the depths of the earth and the heavy movement of the ground disturbed the citizens and tourists who ran out of their homes fearing that they would collapse. Earthquakes were also felt by people who were outside in the town square when the ground moved.

The Center for Crisis Management says that citizens did not report material damage, although, according to information from the Ohrid portals, minor damage was noted in older buildings.

After the earthquake, some parts of Ohrid were left without electricity, most likely because the protection system turned on.

Over 800 earthquakes have been registered in the region of Ohrid from June 18 till today.

Seismologists have previously calmed down anxious citizens by saying that no earthquakes with stronger magnitudes should be expected, since any subsequent earthquake loses its power. Their prognoses were obviously not true.
