In order for their parents to fulfill this desire, they often have to pay huge sums, up to a thousand euros. According to the data of the Republican Health Care Fund, in 2016, the total number of children who had surgeries amounted to 431, while 149 were operated till April this year.
However, this number is not final and it is certainly higher because a lot of young people do it in private clinics.
- These are children aged 14 to 18, and more often, those are girls rather than boys. There is at least one such surgery per week on Military Medical Academy. Republic Health Insurance Company refunds costs if it is a congenital anomaly, such as a deformation of the ear shell, a lack of an ear shell, a shell that has to be completely reconstructed and the like. This includes a cup ear, as well as a deformation of the cartilage itself - says Prof Marijan Novakovic, a specialist in plastic, aesthetics and reconstructive surgery.
