HE IS A MUSLIM, AND SHE IS A SERB! After 28 years they found out they are - BROTHER AND SISTER! Their story is a Hollywood movie
He lived 28 years without his sister on his father's side, who was in a relationship with another woman before his marriage with his mother
Life on these areas is complicated and complex, and not really ordinary. Average person from Balkan in its turmoil life had a great chance to be a part of war, destruction, preparations for war, crisis, nationalism, intolerance, ethnic division, segregation and other exotic social status. We do not have that annoying monotonous Icelandic way of life, no wars, invasions, threat of war ... It just doesn't cut it.
That is how Eldar Nurkovic from Rozajevo started his unusual story in searching for his sister he met after 28 years, for Podgorica "Vijesti".
- I was made in this colorful tapesty, and my life, like most people, was everything but simple. I am a product of successful parents from Yugoslav middle class, father a professor on the Faculty of Economics and mother doctor of medicine. I had potentially good genetic structure, and a bright future. But, as it usually goes, the fickle fate had stepped in with its long fingers, and complicated things - said Eldar, the famous Sarajevo photographer and founder of the "E2 studies", which deals with cinematography.
Many of his photographs have become world-famous, and there were some rewards when he was hired as a director of photography in several movies. He was hired as director of photography on MTV Adria and N1 television, which is the exclusive regional partner of CNN.
- Father in his most prolific work life suffers from, would later turn out, incurable disease that will separate him from us forever. I don't remember much of him. More through the narratives of many people, as the man from Sandzak rough cliffs, from cold and inaccessible northern Montenegro, from slopes of Haile he came to the big city and there built a large and successful career. Along the way he helped many fellow citizens, enrolled hundreds of children and students at universities in Pristina, because because he was one respected professor and he used his influence and power for the education of many people. There he bought his immortality - said Eldar, whose father had the biggest funeral in the history of Rozaje and commemorations statesmen would not be ashamed of.
- He seemingly had a perfect life and career, he was an amazing philanthropist, helping people but something had to go wrong as it usually does on Balkans. He didn't even get the taste of his thirties and he was already sick with cancer of the nasal sinuses that would later metastasize - said Eldar for "Vijesti".
His father Cerim was in relationship with a woman of another fate before his mother, and their parent's didn't support that. They even threatened her that they will denounce her if she marries Cerim.
- That was forbidden love. As far as i know, almost before he died, while he was long married to my mother, a woman appeared, when she found out about his condition, and brought my sister, saying that she doesn't want anything and that she just wants to tell him that he has another child before he leaves this world - said Eldar.
He was five when he left his father and when a civil war broke out on the grounds of former Yugoslavia. He was separated from his mother and spent war and difficult childhood and growing up.
- When i was 18 i found out from my mother that i have a step sister and her name if i want to look her up. I wanted to and i started searching for her. From some people who were close with my father i found out that she lived in Mostar. When i finally reached the address, i found out that they went to Serbia because of war, and perhaps somewhere further. And i was back at the beginning... I thought about finding her every year, to have her, to fulfill that enormous gap in my life which was full with some losses - said Eldar.
There was a possibility that his sister Milena married and changed her last name which would make the search almost impossible.
- I thought and felt that if she knew i existed somewhere in this world that she would contact me somehow. And then the time of social networks began and three years of searching over Facebook. At one moment, her name gave 5 results. I sent the same message which had the same unusual text "Hi, my name is Eldar Nurkovic, i live in Sarajevo and there is a possibility that i am your brother"... Imagine of course the reaction of some Milena Dj. from a village next to Kikinda who read the message... I got negative answers, one after the other. The sister was the one that answered the last - remembers Eldar.
Everything she knew about her father is that his last name was Nurkovic. She called her mom to see the message she received.
- Her mother immediately started crying and she ran to the WC where she locked herself in. My sister slammed at the door hysterically asking for an answer to the question and thousand of question marks over her head. Especially after the fact that she wanted a brother her entire life, asking for her mom to give birth to one. Her mom has sadly, decided that we should not know each other, because me, as a child from a regular marriage and different religion, would not accept a Serb sister Milena, she thought, i guess. Well, she was mistaken - said Eldar who thinks that no one and nothing can fill the time Milena and he lost thinking about each other.
- Soon after the message, Milena came to Sarajevo and we didn't separate for a week... Strange feeling, you don't know your own blood, and her genetic code is attracting you like never before... Who could give themselves the right to "take away" all the years and dreams behind us?... The rest is history. We accepted each other and we were just feeling bad because we didn't have time for one another and that we didn't have one another. No body can take that away from us - said Eldar who recently became a proud uncle of a little Konstantin.
For trivial reasons he lived without his sister, who is now one of the most important people in the world, and he has only one comment.
- Life is to short not to live to the fullest.
