The White House has not officially released a statement on the signing of the protocol.
The US Senate previously ratified the protocol with large majority of senators from both parties - 97, voted in favor, while only two senators, Rand Paul and Mike Lee, were against.
Senators, after giving the green light to Montenegro's membership in NATO, estimated that it will strengthen the Alliance and in the same time strengthen democracy and the independence of Montenegro.
They also said that Montenegro's membership will strengthen US national security and send a strong message to Russia "that tries to occupy the neighbors and changes the international order."
After the president put his signature on the ratified protocol on the expansion of alliances, Netherlands and Spain remain to finalize the procedure of verification.
Montenegrin officials expect that Montenegro will be a full member of NATO at the summit at the end of May in Brussels, according to Voice of America.
