The prisoners are making electronic parts for foreign company that has business in Nis which exports all products
Production of car electronic parts started in Penal and Correctional Facility in Nis , prisoners are making around 30.000 of those parts daily, said the warden Aleksandar Grbovic.
Grbovic said that the daily production will be soon increased to 90.000 car parts.
- The process of acquiring 15 new machines is ongoing and soon we will have 22 - said Grbovic and added that facility works 24 hours a day.
According to him, prisoners are making electronic parts for foreign company that has business in Nis which exports all products.
Grbovic said that they should get more machines for prison press-room which will be opened in the same object where new textile ward started working.
- 45 million dinars of products were made here in the last year. It is about textile products necessary to furnish the prison, as well as uniforms for prison security and court staff - said Grbovic.
Prisoners are making in prison workshops tens of different products like metal fences, furniture, benches, souvenirs, chess boards or bee hives.
- The facility generated revenues of 80 million dinars last year, not counting the returns achieved in the field of agricultural and livestock production - said Golubovic.
According to him, compared to 2013 livestock increased almost four times and now prison has 110 cattle, 1,626 pigs, 358 sheep, about 2,400 hens and 750 rabbits.
In the last three years, he added, agricultural production has been greatly increased, so that the facility provides almost everything needed to feed the convicts, a significant surplus vegetables as well as milk and meat sold in the market.
Prisoners have made around 50 tons of potato and the same amount of cabbage, 41 tons of tomato, 14 tons of paprika, 7 tons of carrots, 8 tons of cucumbers.
- Agricultural production is organized throughout the year, so there are already 16.000 salads and 15.000 onions in the greenhouses.
Correctional Institution in Nis has about 1,400 convicts, and around 1.000 are engaged in some type of work, said Grbovic.
Convicts are choosing themselves what kind of work they want to do, and many learn some craft while they are here, and they continue doing it when they come home.
- There are those who don't want to work. Therefore, legislation should be changed so the prisoners pay for their stay, and not taxpayers - said Golubovic and added charging prisoners who don't want to work is a frequent practice in many countries of the world.
