Boy who inspired hope to entire Balkan: He has no hands, but his heart is so big he will brighten your life (PHOTO)
Even thought she went to ultrasound during pregnancy, no one told the mother Ismail has no hands
The boy Ismail Zulfic (6) from Zenica, who is crushing all the prejudice about people with disability, is showing that people with disability, even the youngest, can participate in society and be independent.
This bright boy was born with no hands, and one of his legs is bent, and on the other he has connected toes. Despite all of that, he is eating on his own, drives a motorcycle, plays games, swims, writes, paints...
Ismail's parents say that it wasn't easy when doctors told them their child was born without hands.
Mother Elmina remembers the pregnancy, during which she went to numerous gynecologists, because, as she said, she had a weird feeling.
- I went to many doctors, but no one told me that my Ismail has no hands - she remembers.
That is why it was a great shock when doctors surrounded her, asking her question after giving birth.
- I did not have the strength to talk, and they kept asking me questions. I realized that something is going on. I turned away by accident and then, i saw they are washing my baby, holding him by the feet, because he had no arms, i was shocked - said Elmina.
However, she said that her decision would be equally the same to carry on with the pregnancy if she had found that she was carrying a child with no hands, but she would be prepared for that situation.
But, Ismail's will to live, study and not allowing anyone to tell him that he is unable to do something on his own, made his parents brave and very proud.
There was, however, difficult moments, when Ismail comprehended that he has no hands and started asking many questions.
- He asked for me and my husband, to give him our hands, to see how it looks like to have hands. Those were the hardest moments in our lives, when he asked if he will ever grow hands or when he asked for our hands so he could hug us too - she remembers.
- The only difficulty is that he can't go to the bathroom on his on. Everything else, believe me, he does on his on. That is a child with not barriers - said the father Ismet.
Ismail's parents were especially hurt when they decided to enroll him to a nursery and to include him with other children, and they had unpleasant situations and rejections from many nurseries in Zenica.
- Five nurseries rejected us in the city, no one wanted him - said the parents.
Ismail joined the Swimming club Spid in Sarajevo, besides learning to swim, he relieved his fear of water.
