One of the most frightening and mysterious legends of Herzegovina
In Imotski, there is a lake that is considered one of the deepest in Europe. For the formation of Red Lake in Herzegovina binds one of the most terrifying and mysterious legends.
- To this day, cries of the Gavan and Gavanica can be heard from the depths of the lake on whose farm the Red Lake in Imotski was created - residents of Imotski tell the story.
Director of the Tourist Board of Imotski Luka Kolovrat, said that this specific place is known for its many legends, tales of fairies and elves.
- The Legend of Gavan is famous and is linked to the origin of Red Lake. Once upon a time, in this area there was a huge estate of the then richest man named Gavan. He had Gavanica wife, children and a large number of servants. Gavan was not only known for his wealth, but also by pride - told the Kolovrat.
- He was hot-tempered and abused all his servants, and the people who came to see him. One evening an angel descended disguised as a beggar and asked for mercy from Gavan, to see his haughtiness. The door was opened by Gavanica, his wife, and she did not want to give him nor food or water. The angel asked Gavanica if she was afraid of God, to which she responded that she does not fear anyone as long as her Gavan is alive. At this point, all hell broke loose. The country has rumbled, thunder began, lightning flashed, and entire Gavan property, Gavan, Gavanica and their children have sunk into the ground that opened. This is the place of today's Red Lake - added Kolovrat.
This story is passed from generation to generation. The oldest inhabitants of Imotski say that when the weather is good, the sky is clear, the water is calm and when there is no other people around, even today in the Red Lake, you can see the remains of the old castle walls of Gavan!
Besides all the grisly details, the Red Lake is one of the most beautiful pearls of Middle Dalmatia. Has a circumference of 200 meters and the water depth reaches up to 300 meters with a bottom which is below sea level. Recently, it was found that the lake is 252 meters deep!
