Pero Jelecevic, Dopsina local, barely survived the attack of the great Asian hornet. He had a heart attack few minutes after he was stung by a hornet.

Husband went out in the yard around 22 pm two weeks ago when horned stung him under the armpit. He ran into the house. "Take me to the ambulance, i don't feel well". While i took the car key, Pero already fell down and started choking. His tongue was swollen and he was like paralyzed. I remembered i had some allergy drops and i gave them to him. I somehow pulled his tongue out to prevent him from suffocating. Doctors gave him injections, but 14 years ago he had a heart surgery and he has a bypass, so he got a heart attack. He was in the intensive care for 7 days in the hospital, but he is alright now - said Dragana Jelecevic for the Glas Slavonije, wife of the bitten Pera.

She added that the hornets, which are still seen in the courtyard of their house are incredibly large, and the person who arrived to remove them said that they are Asian, actually Indian hornet.

- So far i have came across this species of hornet in Dopsin, Darda and Bocanjevci. There were several thousands in Bocanjevci. They most probably arrived to Slavonia and Baranja on the wooden logs from India. So far they already crossed with domestic species, the mutations occurred and now they are even more dangerous. They are four to five centimeters large, yellow color backs and black stripes. They are mostly found on the attics and hollow trees. They attack people without any obvious reason, especially when they have larvae or when they feel threatened - said the experts who deals in removal of these insects.

Docent dr. sc. Visnja Prus from the Department of Clinical Immunology and Allergology, University Hospital Center Osijek, says the problem is that the Asian hornet secretes hormones and warns that other individuals it is attacked and it is possible to call the whole swarm.

- The Asian hornet is much bigger than those normally find in our region. Have larger toxin glands that can cause problems with the kidneys and other organs. However, its stings can hurt healthy people, not just those who are normally allergic - explained dr. sc Visnja Prus.

Docent dr. sc. Mirta Sudaric Bogojevic, representative of the Institute of Zoology Department of Biology at the University of Osijek Josip Juraj Strossmayer, briefly explained what kind of danger hornets present.

- Hornets are active all day, especially at dusk at this time of year when they reproduce and they have other things to do other than seek new shelters where they overwinter. Domestic, so called, angry hornet, is 3 centimeters long, and Asian hornets are up to five centimeters long. They produce more poison and the results of their sting with people with lower immunity and allergic people are far more dangerous- said dr. sc. Mira Sudarevic Bogojevic.

As she further points out, the amount and severity of symptoms depends on the location and depth of the sting.

- It's not the same if a hornet stings someone in the head, neck or body. The head and neck are the most sensitive and should be acted upon as soon as possible, especially if the sting is in the mouth. The sting place should be treated with ice and immediately should be went to the hospital. If the reaction is localized, if there is itching and the place is red, it can be treated with folk remedies, but if you feel shortness of breath, a drop in pressure and fainting, they are  pre reactions of anaphylactic shock, if the response and treatment is not fast it could lead to death - she explained.

After a hornet sting reactions in people prone to allergies can occur immediately after the first sting, but it is more common in people who have been stung before. Although the bees die after the first sting, hornets and wasps do not give up so easily. They can sting a man once and several times, and survive and continue attacking.

Asian hornet is spreading inexorably, because our country has no natural enemies, for example. birds and the like, which are destroying them in their original habitat.
