Due to the increasing number of killings, domestic violence and other serious criminal offenses committed using illicit firearms, as well as the lenient sentences imposed by the courts, the government has responded by tightening the penal policy.

- Until now, it was stipulated minimum of six months in prison for these crimes, and the draft amendments to the Criminal Code envisages that minimum sentence that the court may impose is a year - said the Minister of Justice Nela Kuburovic.

She pointed out that the Ministry of Justice approved the request of the Ministry of Interior to tighten penalties due to the fact that in recent years there has been increased number of serious crimes because of the use of illicit weapons.
