Bosnian pine tree was discovered during the research expedition of the Navarino Environmental Observatory (NEO) where Stockholm University, Athens Academy and TEMES S.A. participated. It got its name after the Greek good of beauty, Adonis, and the news about this oldest tree in Europe was reported by British Daily Mail as well.

- It is incredible how big, complex and impressive "organism" survived this long in very inhospitable environmentin the land where people have been living of the 3.000 years. After many years i ready about his very interesting forest in Greece. In our research, we strive to build chronological maps to reconstruct climatic history, and the discovery of this tree was one of the motivators - wrote the leader of the expedition that discovered this tree, Swedish dendrohronologist  Paul J. Krusic, and he pointed out that he is impressed with this discovery.

He explained the way to measure the tree cores which determined the age of this Bosnian pine tree and it has 1.0750 year rings.

- In the context of Western civilization, all human history surrounds this tree, all empires, all the people who lived in this region. So many things could have led to his disappearance, but fortunately, this tree survived for thousand years intact - said Krusic.

It is interesting for example that Adonis was planted when Byzantine empire was at its peak, it was 100 years old when Maket was crown for the king of Sweden, 500 when Greece fell under the Ottoman empire, 750 when Newton formulated the laws of movements. It survived the conquests of German Nazis, Italy and Bulgaria, which took over Greece during history.
