Serbia, think hard! You almost lost your Olympic champion three years ago

What a story from our Olympic champion. He had epilepsy, huge dioptre... And he conquered it all

Eight years ago he cried like rain when he was eliminated in the first round of the competition in Olympic games in Beijing, and three years ago he wanted to abandon wrestling

Today Davor Stefanek is the Olympic champion only thanks to his willpower and inner strength.

- The last Olympic cycle made thinking about quitting wrestling. In 2013 i said i will do it no more.

- Then my mother talked me into continuing: "Come on son, keep on going for a year or two" - said in Rio for the Vecernje novosti, Davor Stefanek.

What sounds even more amazing are the worlds of the champion's mother.

- When he was a small boy he was cross-eyed, and had the diptre +9. Luckily it was solved with surgery - said for Informer Djendjika Stefanek.

- When he was 13 it was asserted that he has epilepsy. We did not allow for it to become a problem. Also, he had problems with bronchitis, and once his intestines tied up.

The story about courage of the first medal winner for Serbia in Rio goes to the one competition in Belarus.

- I remember, when he wrestled for Kanjiza, they were in Belarus and he forgot his medications for epilepsy at home. They flew over Moscow when he got seizure. He ended up in hospital, and he calls me and said "mother, i'm going to run away from hospital, they won't let me wrestle, they want to give me some meds, i am not taking that."

- We, as parents, had to sign for his release from hospital on our own responsibility. Davor went to the tournament and was the only winner for Kanjiza in that match - his mother remembers.
