First patient was registered during the weekend in Serbia this year that has West Nile fever, and the research is being conducted for two more patients, said today the director of the Institute for public health "Dr Milan Jovanovic Batut" Dragan Ilic.

The infected person is located in the Institute of Infections and Tropical Diseases of the Clinical center of Serbia.

-One person got infected and we have two more cases that are suspected to be the West Nile fever. We will define if its two more infections during the day - said Ilic for the RTS.

He added that there are information about new locations where the virus was detected, which testifies of the presence of the virus in wider area of Serbia, so it is necessary to treat the mosquitoes and take precaution to protect ourselves from bites.

According to him, personal protection is important, that is not to leave the house in the early morning and in the evening without long sleeves and pants and to set protective nets on the windows.

Also, it is important to remove any still water from the yards and avoid the locations next to ponds and rivers in the evening hours.

- Local governments have to make the mosquitoes their priority, we have the info that some of the local authorities have done nothing to prevent them from growing in numbers - added Ilic.
