EVIL SISTERS CUT TOES AND THE MOTHER TRANSFORMS TO COW: You will be shocked by OLD SERBIAN "Cinderella"!
Serbian fairy tale "Cinderella" is not universal, its actually ours with the characteristics of folk tradition, biblical, Serbian and people myths, with the clear message that good people are being rewarded in live
The famous fairy tale about Cinderella was written by Charles Perrault in 1697 and it has over 300 versions of it. The most famous and milder story of Grim Brothers (1812), which is told to the children all around the world for good night.
Little is known that only nine years later Vuk Stefanovic Karadzic wrote the Serbian version of the Cinderella Mara fairy tale, which only reminds of the original story. There is no ball and no shoe. Serbian Cinderella is wearing slippers and going to the liturgy to the church on Sunday.
In Perrault "Cinderella" she was originally Ashrella because she often set by the stove. It is interesting that the sisters begged for forgiveness of Cinderella but she put them in her castle and married them to the staff, while she married the prince that found her slipper.
In the first version of Grim Brothers, which was milder and milder as years passed because it had some horrible scenes, like the one where Cinderellas evil sisters cut the toes and heels so they can fit the shoe. We must not forget the scene of tragic ending where the birds peck out the eyes of the evil sisters in the end.
Pretty scary sights to tell, you must admit. Even the grown ups can not read the lines with indifference.
Vuk Stefanovic Karadzic recorded a fairy tale about Cinderella Mara in 1821 as a Serbian folk brainchild, relying only partly to the original version. He wanted for Mara to have Serbian characteristics, to go to the church on Sunday, to wear slippers. She spends most of her time by the fire and ashes, and hence the name Cinderella.
In this version of the fairy tale her mother is being transformed to a cow that helps her fulfill the impossible tasks of her evil stepmother. When the cow is killed by the order of the stepmother, the mothers legacy is that the cow bones should be buried to the spot where Cinderella would come when she had difficulties in life
And that is no coincidence.
In Serbian folklore and history, the graves of the ones we love are the holly place. It is the place of salvation for those who remain living, so Cinderella goes to the mothers grave, and there, like in a fairy tale, she finds a coffin full with wonderful dresses for the liturgy.
The emperor's son has seen her twice before he decided for the third time to search for her after her slipper fell off while she was going back from the church, rushing so her stepmother wouldn't see her that she left the house.
She is a poor and modest girl, and the emperor's son marries her at the end.
Serbian fairy tale "Cinderella" is not universal, its actually ours with the characteristics of folk tradition, biblical, Serbian and people myths, with the clear message that good people are being rewarded in live.
