Saint-Lot: 23,000 children migrants pass through Serbia

Around 23,000 children migrants have passed through Serbia since the beginning of the year to date, but it is suspected that the figure is much higher because many children were not registered, UNICEF Director for Serbia Michel Saint-Lot said

Saint-Lot told Radio Television of Serbia that the country is already providing the children with fundamental support, but he noted that more effort needs to be invested in provision of best possible psycho-social support.

We are collaborating with the Serbian government in the establishment of the Children's Corner where the kids would get psycho-social support and food so that they could be well-prepared for the next part of the trip, and they will also be able to play there, Saint-Lot said.

The UNICEF director also commended the Serbian government's efforts aimed at providing migrants with best possible assistance.

Had it not been for the cooperation with the government, Serbia would have faced an emergency situation, and there is no such problem today, he said although he noted that the situation is difficult.

We are partners with the NGO sector as well but the most important matter is that the people of Serbia are generous, Saint-Lot said.
