Odalovic: 10,837 missing persons in region

The pace at which the fate of people who have disappeared is being resolved in the region is dissatisfactory, as a total of 10,837 people are still missing, the head of the Serbian government commission on missing persons, Veljko Odalovic, said on Friday

What is of particular concern is that there are still 5,000 identified bodies in mortuaries across the region - in Zenica, Sarajevo, Banja Luka, Zagreb, Pristina, he told a press conference on the occasion of August 30, the International Day of the Disappeared.

Odalovic added that the Mostar Declaration, signed by leaders of Serbia, Croatia, Montenegro and Bosnia-Herzegovina last summer in order to resolve the issue of the disappeared, has not yielded results in this respect.

There is no place in Serbia that has not been checked and every piece of information is taken seriously, Odalovic pointed out.

President of Veritas Documentation and Information Centre Savo Strbac said that, according to their recent data, there were 7,210 killed and missing Serbs in the territory of Croatia and Republic of Serb Krajina, including 6,165 men and 1,645 women.

As for the disappeared, Strbac said there were 1,874 of them, 510 women and 1,364 men.
