Ivana Španović, in company with her coach Goran Obradović arrived in Belgrade, proud of their success. They were met by applause, flowers, congratulations, kisses ...
- Now I actually feel a lot better than I felt at the very end of the competition. I knew what to expect, I knew how good I had to be to win a medal - said our record breaker for Telegraf at the airport "Nikola Tesla".
What better sign than this that Ivana wins gold today?
It was a long way over from Moscow, and although tired, Ivana's face showed satisfaction and motivation for future challenges. And most importantly, she is confident that she can break records at every subsequent contest.
- I could have jumped 7.01 and ended up without a medal, or jumped less and had not done anything. After all the medals I won at age 25, I have a routine and experience to steadily perform and think about things rationally. I went in all or nothing, even at the cost of leaving without a medal, although I have four already and they just keep coming in. The point is to have no fear and in that way, I can jump riskier.
In analyzing her success, Ivana pointed out that strong competitors encourage her to be better.
- I'm not a girl who runs 10.80 like Tiana Bertolli and who can jump seven meters anytime. I technically had to be perfect in order to jump seven meters. I repeated it twice, won the bronze medal. And certainly, a lot more proud to have bronze from seven meters in such a competition, rather than with gold at 6.80. From such a series I did in Beijing and continuously two years now, I know I'll be ready for a much larger range in Rio - adds Ivana.
Tiana Bertolli, who in Beijing got hold of gold, is really like Roger Federer in tennis - anyone who challenges her, must be born a champion.
- She's really a sprinter that does a long jump. Until two or three years she ran just sprint, and then she would switch to jump, and come back ... she pays attentiont to the competition and reasons waht she will be performing in. She's really a remarkable athlete, has a strong will and a very strong head for the long jump, which is shown in the sixth series.
She won the gold at the European Championships, but this is golden Ivana’s greatest wish!
Španović discovered an important detail from Beijing.
- We had a press conference, and I just listened to what (Bertolli) said. There, I heard exactly what I was thinking. And that just confirmed that I think in the right direction: that no matter how the competition should go - only to watch your favor, that you do not think that somebody will jump better than you, and how to pull your maximum - said Serbian record holder and emphasized:
- I really have no complaints. I was at the level where I was before. I know that I will be great in Rio.
When we commented that she was too harsh on herself when she realized that she had once again won bronze, Ivana explained:
- Since the beginning of the year I knew I would be going to Beijing and fighting for the highest rank. I ended up in Prague in the first place at the European Championship. I know I gave up on a few meets of the Diamond League because of an injury and that I arrived in Beijing with different results.
- Hardly anyone knows this in Serbia and everyone favored me for gold, although no one knew who was waiting for me there. I did not want to comment on that, because simply: we are such people that "either gold or nothing." That's how I accepted it, I went there because I know how ready I am. I struggled, because ultimately, it is a sport.
Coming up soon is the finale of the Diamond League in Zurich (Thursday, September 3), and then rally in Berlin (Sunday, September 6).
- The starting list from Beijing is only moving to Zurich. We'll be on our A game, even fresher, probably a little more relaxed, and I expect a nice fight. I even got a task from my coach to fulfill, I'll see how far I get.
What is the task, can we know?
- Well... in level with 7.01. That is, to try to outdo the previous result - concluded Ivana Španović with a smile.
