EU support does not include migrant accommodation center

The European Commission talked with the authorities in Serbia about migration flows across Serbia, and Brussels points out that the EU's assistance does not include any plan for building collective accommodation centers for migrants in Serbia or any other country

Our aim is to offer support to Serbia and other countries in the region in solving the issue of increased migrant flows, reads a statement from the European Commission about the increased migrant flows through Serbia, which Tanjug received from EU Info Center.

This implies the provision of financial assistance (through the ECHO and Instrument for Pre-Accession Assistance) that the EU can make available in the short term for meeting the most urgent humanitarian needs, and the mid-term and long-term support for an upgrade of infrastructure (e.g. private capacities) in the country so as to cope with a larger number of migrants, notes the release.

Serbia will not build lasting reception centres for migrants

The European Union will determine the scope of assistance based on the needs assessment that the Serbian government is currently conducting, the European Commission said.

However, the EU's backing does not include plans for any kind of collective accommodation center for migrants in Serbia or any other country in the region, reads the statement.
