Serbia against Kosovo's admission to UNESCO

The Serbian Ministry of Culture and Government are adamantly against the admission of Kosovo to UNESCO, as they believe that such a move would deliver a severe blow to the reconciliation process and cultural heritage, Culture Minister Ivan Tasovac has said in Milan

“We believe that such a move- at this still very sensitive political moment and in the midst of the negotiations on the normalization of relations- would inflict major damage to the reconciliation process and the very cultural heritage in Kosovo which does not belong just to Serbia, but to Europe and the world,” he stressed on Saturday.

Tasovac spoke at an international conference, whose central topic was the promotion of culture as the factor of dialogue and understanding among peoples, as part of the Expo 2015.

The minister noted that even today, medieval monasteries in Kosovo are encircled by barbed wire, protected by KFOR troops, so as to prevent their destruction, such as the one that took place in 2004, which UNESCO itself witnessed.

“I am of the opinion that before any rash moves a new UNESCO expert mission should come to Kosovo and see the state that the cultural heritage is in, how competent and organized are services tasked to take care about it,” Tasovac said.
