Vulin: Serbia bearing brunt of costs of care for migrants

Serbia approaches the problem of migrants pursuant to all standards and is bearing the brunt of the costs, but EU assistance is necessary, Serbian Minister of Labour and Social Affairs Aleksandar Vulin said on Thursday

Responding to questions from MPs in the Serbian parliament, Vulin said that 64,022 people have requested asylum in Serbia since the beginning of this year, as opposed to last year's 16,500.

Serbia is bearing the brunt of the costs of providing care to migrants - the costs are enormous and Serbia cannot bear that burden on its own, Vulin said, adding that "the EU and other donors are still not paying the required amount of attention" to the problem of the large influx of migrants in Serbia.

Serbia has received EUR 40,000 - 50,000 from international organisations, RSD 6 million from the UNHCR, as well as about RSD 11.3 million in food and equipment, he said.

Asked whether Kanjiza and Subotica - Serbia's northernmost cities - can expect financial assistance, Vulin said that both cities will get accommodation for migrants, while Kanjiza will open a reception centre for people returning from Hungary under a readmission agreement, and that the wall being erected on the Hungarian border is forcing the migrants to move northward more quickly.
