In fact, this artificial lake was created by the construction of the Grančarevo dam on the river Trebisnjica near the town in 1968. The dam is 123 meters high and 439 meters wide. At the bottom of the lake there are abandoned villages that were evacuated during the construction of hydroelectric power stations Trebinje I.
In raising the water, houses were submerged in addition to farms from the village of Panik, Walnut, Čepelica, Zadublje and Miruše.
Together with these villages, the water sank monuments of the past: cemeteries, roads and churches. Among them is the monastery Kosijerevo, as well as many cultural and historical monuments.
In fact, at the bottom of the lake lies an entire village that also preserves the spirit of the past, and that could tell a ton of amazing stories.
Due to the construction of the Grančarevo dam on the Trebišnjica and the accumulation of the Bileca Lake, the Monastery Kosijerevo was moved to a new location in the village of Petrovici in Banjani. This sanctuary had in its possession about 3,000 hectares of land, mills, and within the churchyard there was a hospital.
After 1946, the former communist government took over nearly the entire property, and after moving the monastery, only meager ports and a half an acre of arid land was left.
As far as the Bileca Lake, and the entire basin of the Trebišnjica River, it is rich in exceptional locations for diving. This lake is very popular with sports divers that can, in its depth see an entire town - houses, roads, churches, cemeteries, and fantastic underwater paysage.
In addition to divers, Bileca Lake is a favorite destination for fishers.
