Group of illegal Iraqi migrants seek asylum in Serbia

The Smederevo police found on motorway E75 on Monday 22 Iraqi citizens without personal documents, who requested asylum in Serbia, the Interior Ministry has said.

The group was moving along the motorway towards Belgrade on foot, the statement says.

After the migrants were taken to the Smederevo police headquarters, it was determined they were Iraqi citizens who had come into Serbia from Macedonia on foot, outside established border crossings, and that they had fled Iraq because of the armed conflict in that country.

Since they all requested asylum in Serbia, they were instructed to report to the Asylum Centre in Krnjaca within 72 hours, according to the statement.
