The first Buddhist temple opened in the heart of Fruska Gora: See what it looks like (PHOTO)
A Buddhist temple was opened today in Serbia in the city of Cartonovci, near Novi Sad and in the heart of Fruska Gora, in the presence of the Oxford monks and Buddhist communities from Great Britain, Thailand, Myanmar, Hungary, Montenegro, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, and Slovenia.
According to the president of the Buddhist society "Middle Way" Branko Kovacevic who initiated the initiative to establish this sanctuary, it will be a kind of meditation center as a branch of the Oxford Monastery Buddha Vihara from Great Britain, and all the people of good will be able to go here and to seek peace, no matter their religion.
One of the most famous Buddhists in Serbia, Srdjan Gojkovic Gile, frontmen of the band "Elektricni Orgazam", was at the opening, and he said that there is a lot of prejudice about Buddhism, which comes from ignorance.
Few people know that there was already a Buddhist temple in Belgrade, built in 1929 in the former Kingdom of Serbs, Croats, and Slovenes, but since the Second World War, there has been none in existence, so it can be said that this is the first Buddhist temple in modern Serbia.
