Research by organization Transparency International, "People and corruption: Europe and Central Asia 2016" would rank Serbia at the bottom of 42 countries when it comes to bribery.

It included more than 60,000 people, among whom 39 percent of respondents from Serbia termed corruption as one of the three biggest problems in the country, 45 percent of them are not satisfied with the way the authorities are fighting against corruption, 28 percent admitted that they paid bribes, while 22 percent believe that MPs are corrupted.

- Armenia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Lithuania, Moldova, Russia and Ukraine have been identified as the countries with the highest corruption problems - according to a study in which the best were rated Germany, Sweden, Switzerland, Netherlands and Georgia.

One in three residents of Europe and Central Asia sees corruption as one of the biggest challenges for their country, but they are afraid of retribution if they talk about it, according to research published today by the organization Transparency International.

In the EU, more than 66 percent of Spaniards believe that corruption is the biggest problem they face, while only two percent of Germans identified corruption as a pressing problem, according to a survey.

The highest level of corruption in the EU was registered in Romania, where 29 percent of respondents acknowledged that they paid bribes, followed by 24 percent of Lithuanians and 22 percent of Hungarians.

- At least 30 percent of the respondents said that corruption is not reported because people fear the consequences, 14 percent say it is difficult to prove it, and 12 percent do not report corruption because they believe that the authorities will not do anything about it. The study showed that only one in five people who have paid bribes reported corruption, as well as two of the five people who reported are suffering some form of consequence - says in research and international non-governmental organizations to combat corruption states that a growing number of populist and nationalist movements in Europe can be due to the inability of traditional democratic institutions to fulfill the promise of prosperity and equal opportunities for all.

- Governments simply do not do enough to combat corruption, because individuals at the top have benefited from it - said the director of "Transparency International" Jose Ugaz and stressed that governments must provide greater transparency to end a deeply disturbing connection of wealth, power and corruption.
