Doctors from Serbia reveal the chances of heavy diseases 15 years ahead using DNA test and teach you what to do to prevent them (PHOTO)
What would happen if we could find out in the third year of the child's life if it will suffer from any disease if it chose to work with chemicals, so it can chose some different occupation and not get sick? What if the mother of the little girl could find out that she would lose her health if it ever got breast implants?
FAMOUS SERBIAN DOCTOR CLAIMS: Storage of stem cells is unnecessary waste of money!
All this is possible in Serbia with the DNA analysis. Its free in Belgrade, and in Institute for public health in Kragujevac it costs 20.000 dinars. Patient is taken a blood sample and DNA analysis is performed which discovers everything about our genes - the ones that protect us and the risky ones.
DNA analysis allows the experts to determine the set of gens which carries the increased risk of getting the disease of the immune system, such as diabetes or multiple sclerosis. Risk is determined at a still healthy person, even with children. That kind of science may seem like fortunetelling to the amateurs, a fairy tale, where a man gets a chance to beat destiny.
Doctor Nevenka Ilic, specialist in pediatrics and immunology of the institute for public health in Kragujevac, said if the doctor discovers the risk, we have the chance to prevent the sickness.
- Not only the genetic risk is enough for the development of some disease, but also the influence of the environment. That is something we can take part. Carriers of certain gene will develop certain disease if the person is exposed to chemicals on the workplace, so according to that, we could chose the work place. Mother of a small girl will know that her child has a gene that can cause dermatomyositis if she gets the breast implants, very difficult disease of muscles and skin. Smoking is one of the risk factors for multiple sclerosis, parent, who's child is a carrier of the risky gene, can protect him from disability from explaining to him that he must not light a cigarette - explains Nevenka Ilic.
She explain that the institute, in accordance with the DNA testing, educates the parents how can they prevent some disease from ever occurring.
DNA analysis, on the other hand, can save parents from dark thoughts if their successor is the carrier of their "bad" genes.
- A child who's parent has diabetes type 1 could have that risk, but that's not necessarily true. In some cases, the child inherits the gene from the father, and the protective gene from a mother, that nullifies the risk gene. The analysis is not performed on children only. They serve for diagnostic in the cases when there are unspecified symptoms, so doctors can not set the diagnosis and they start the treatment of the patient for months and years. One patient did the analysis in 2.000, because of the unclear symptoms, it was suspected that she had multiple sclerosis, which runs in her family. She doesn't have it, she even has the protective gene against that disease - said Dr Ilic.
In the labs of the Institute for public health in Kragujevac the risk of allergy can be determined, rheumatism, spondylitis - inflammation of the large joints, celiac disease - lifetime disorder of gluten absorbtion, diabetes type 1, autoimmune thyroid disease, psoriasis...
Dr Dragan Vasiljevic, the director of the Institute said that for the equipment and the space the institute invested around 60.000 euros. While the analysis in Belgrade is free, institute in Kragujevac awaits for the signing of the contract with the Republic fund for health insurance.
In the city on Lepenica river, the analysis for allergies cost from 800 up to 10.000 dinars, while the analysis for autoimmune disease is 20.000.
Only genetic examination of the risk of allergies with children in Serbia would help save 1.5 billion dinars to the state, because many children would never get sick nor would be treated.
Genetic examination for autoimmune disease, such as diabetes and multiple sclerosis, which lead to many years of expensive treatment, disability and a wheelchair, would save the much more money to the state.
The value of health which is preserved by these analysis, has no price.
