In 1804, this day was crucial for Serbian history.

On this day, Karađorđe Petrović began the First Serbian Uprising in the village of Orašac.

On the same date in 1835, Serbia got a first Constitution of the state, made in the city of Kragujevac, and this is celebrated as National holiday.

Our people have different customs and beliefs tied to this holiday.

The first change is that days become longer once again, and the night grow shorter.

It is said that summer and winter meet with Winter saying: "You give me naked and barefoot people, and I give you back them well-clad", where the Summer replies: "True, but they like me better".

This day is also a weather determination.

It is believed that the Sun shines on this day, bears come out of their caves; if a bear sees his shadow and gets scared, he will go back and winter will last for another six weeks.

One should light a candle on this day because it is believed that the flame has a hidden power and that it will protect the house from all mishaps.

Another interesting belief is that young girls will meet their companion on this day.

They should be careful whom they meet in the morning, because this type of man will be their husband.
