A NEW DRUG HAS ARRIVED IN SERBIA: Parents, get dry cough syrup away from your children!

The drug "purple drank", which is very popular in France, is made from cough syrup and an allergy drug, and France's Union of Pharmacists warned the public of the variety of effects, because the syrup contains two opiates: codeine and dekstometorfan, which produce euphoria, drowsiness, hallucinations, and may lead to coma.

However, although it is very popular in France, it is not "out of this world" in Serbia, says pharmacist Vukosava Stevanovic for "Alo". According to her, the syrup "Codeine" for dry coughs, was banned 30 years ago, because it was used by drug addicts, which is why drugs with this substance cannot be given without a prescription. However, although only one type of this syrup is registered here, it does not mean that there is no danger.

- This, however, does not lessen the risk, because the other syrups containing codeine and dekstometorfan can be smuggled in and bought on the black market, because  this is not yet developed here. The instruction package states that it can be used only for seven days, with no alcohol, and that applies to the one that is registered with us. The warning states that the use of the drug causes drowsiness and that driving and operating machinery is not recommended - she told the newspaper and pointed out that the current situation in France demonstrates that the European Union is not yet properly regulated.

- All I can tell parents is to be careful and not to leave the syrup for dry cough at arm's reach, but I can not tell them how to safely destroy it, because that has not been properly regulated in Serbia. They should not throw the medicine down the drain or in the trash - advises Stevanovic to parents.
