THIS WEEKEND SEES THE RISE OF CROATIA: 50,000 people will take to the streets to protest poverty!
Mass protests have been announced for the upcoming weekend in Croatia, with more than 50,000 people taking to the streets. This is, at least according to political analysts, the end of the indifferent attitude of the citizens towards the crisis and a strong warning to the political leadership of the country that it must be changed.
The protests come only a few days after the publication of the ranking list of performance of EU member states by the European Commission, in which Croatia was in last place, relayed by "Novosti.rs".
What has been long predicted, that Croatia will have the same fate as Greece, now seems to be right. Public finances have sunk, there are no investments, unemployment issues are solved artificially, blocked accounts keep piling up, much like citizens who cannot pay back loans. Europe is seeking of Croatia to tighten the belt in order to lessen the deficit. Real reforms are still no where to be seen, and it is pretty certain that there will be none in the upcoming election year.
The first to come out on the streets will be the "blocked", ie citizens who cannot pay their bills because most of them have been left without a job. Today, those account for more than 300,000, and from month to month the debts only grow. The next ones announcing protests are savers in "the Swiss bank" who are dissatisfied with the way of resolving their fate.
The list of discontent citizens in Croatia is longer and larger, so for the government of Zoran Milanovic, this will be a long, hot summer. The elections are expected later this year.
The rise to the streets this weekend will be proof that Croats have lost patience waiting for "a better future", and that there are far less people who believe that entering in Europe was a magic wand to cure their problems.
